Start with the source you have

01

Confirm the operating agreement first

Before designing the connector, confirm dropship eligibility, supported destinations, order cutoffs, packing requirements and return handling. The supplier must agree to the order format and the customer details needed to ship. Software cannot replace those commercial arrangements.

  • Identify a supplier operations contact
  • Document fees and restrictions outside the integration
02

Choose the right level of order automation

Shopify’s native custom fulfillment service can send order information by email. It does not automatically return fulfillment progress. If you need acknowledgments, inventory checks or tracking import, we assess the supplier’s supported inputs and outputs before proposing a custom workflow.

  • Use native email fulfillment when sufficient
  • Define what counts as supplier acceptance
03

Validate each purchase request

Map store variants to supplier item codes and confirm quantities, shipping method and address requirements. Only the agreed order state should trigger transmission. A repeated event or retry must not become a second supplier purchase.

  • Record a stable purchase reference
  • Queue unknown SKUs and rejected destinations
04

Build the after-order process too

Partial shipments, substitutions, cancellations and returns need explicit rules. A cancellation request may arrive after picking has started; it is not a confirmed cancellation. Keep supplier responses visible and update only the shipment quantities supported by actual dispatch evidence.

  • Keep customer notifications intentional
  • Send only necessary customer data to each supplier

BEFORE YOU START

The useful questions.

What is possible depends on your data, existing systems and the way your business works.

What if my supplier only accepts email?

Native email fulfillment may be enough. A more structured workflow depends on whether their replies provide reliable acceptance and dispatch details.

Can several suppliers fulfill one cart?

Yes, with line-level ownership, separate requests and clear partial-shipment handling. Supplier charges and shipping promises need their own rules.

Can tracking update automatically?

When an authorized, reliable dispatch source can be matched to the correct fulfillment. Ambiguous records should wait for review.

Are supplier accounts included?

No. You need an approved relationship, usable data access and agreed ordering terms with each supplier.
